One of the resources we love for keeping our minds working is The Writer's Almanac (www.writersalmanac.publicradio.org). Garrison Keillor hosts this daily five-minute show which begins with a poem, then continues with interesting literary and historical facts.
We love listening to poetry, which doesn't seem to crop up all that much in the ordinary course of our daily lives. But we cherish connecting to that more intellectual side of ourselves. Listening to summaries of the lives and works of great authors on their birthdays gives us new ideas for reading - or at least tidbits we can drop and make others think we are more interesting than we actually are!
In our area, we hear the Writer's Almanac at 9:35 a.m, Monday through Friday. Not terribly convenient. However, with our computers we can either stream the Writer's Almanac any time we want (from the Writer's Almanac home page, click "listen,") or subscribe to a podcast every day. Now, it may amaze and horrify you that your Girlfriends aren't totally up-to-date on every single thing that has to do with the Internet. But we view these gaps as opportunities to learn. At any rate, to subscribe to a podcast, you need to download some podcast software. iTunes is one example. There are other examples on the Writer's Almanac pocast link we cited before. There are specific instructions if you use iTunes, and general instructions if you use other software. Read the page more thoroughly than Alex did the first time, and the instructions are there.
So, you see, you have the opportunity to expand your mind in two ways with this Show and Tell Me newsletter. You can listen to a poem or two every day, and learn how to download podcasts. What a bonus!
