ideal gifts for gardeners

We are getting down to the wire, here, but your trusty Girlfriends are still here working away for you. Today, we are featuring gifts for gardeners. Through diligent searching, we have even found quite a few that are on sale!!!

If you know a gardener, garden gifts are always welcome. We know that it may seem that you are giving the equivalent of a mop or toilet brush, but no! Those of us who garden like to do it, and even the aspects of gardening that are more drudgery just come along with the entire package. In addition, we love to think of gardens ahead in the winter.

That said, on to the gifts. If you gardening friend does not already have a pair, rush online and buy a pair of Felco Pruners. These are simply the best hand pruners around. Most women would use the #6 pruner, which is sized for smaller hands. iconAlex has a couple of big mitts, and she uses the #8 pruner. This is

the size for most men (yes, we know, she has some big, capable hands, there) or for a woman who wears size Large gloves. The classic #2 prunericon is the same size as the #8, but is not ergonomic. The #9 is for larger-handed lefties. Follow the links in this paragraph, or, if they don't work for you, the #6 is 20% off at www.highcountrygardens.com, the #8 and #9 can be found (regularly-priced) at www.orcchardsedge.com, and the #2icon is available (regularly priced) at www.gardeners.com. If you need to go out to a store to get them, Smith & Hawken has a good supply. Remember the name. Felco.

Nothing brightens a winter day like a flower in bloom, and we have a couple of choices for you. High Country Gardens (www.highcountrygardens.com) is selling a lovely amaryllis kit, ready-to-plant (and on sale!). If you would like to continue to treat your loved one beyond the holidays, think about sending three months of flowers iconfrom Gardener's Supply
(www.gardeners.com). The bulbs arrive pre-planted, and will bloom about three weeks after arrival. Gardener's Supply also sells more preplanted flowersicon, all the way up to a year of flowering plants.

iconicon We have some ideas that evoke the garden without requiring any actual work, as well. A Plant a Tree ornament iconfrom Gardener's Supply is pretty and does a bit of good. For each ornament sold, Gardener's Supply will plant a tree. (Plus, this one is on sale, and is only $8.99! Excellent price point!) Another ornament, and one we think is a wonderful gift for children, is a Bird Seed Egg.
High Country Gardens is selling them in packs of a dozen (on sale!). The children hang the eggs in trees to give the neighborhood birds a little holiday cheer. On a slightly different note, the Snow Gauge iconfrom Gardener's Supply is a zippy piece of yard art, and will enable your friends to measure the snowfall while staying cozy and warm inside!

One last gift - along the toilet brush and vacuum cleaner lines, but trust us, it will be appreciated. High Country Gardens has an excellent digging fork (on sale for 20% off). For those who are not acquainted with how much easier a digging fork makes the back-breaking job of breaking up compacted garden soil - well, prepare to be amazed and gratified. Alex's dear departed mother's garden was made of potting-quality clay. Alex spent a lot of time hacking at that clay. When she discovered a digging fork people heard her cries of joy in the next county.

And there you have it. Wonderful gifts for every gardener on your list. With express shipping, they can even arrive on time for Christmas!

Your dirty-fingernailed Girlfriends,

Alex and Suzanne
