Jamie Oliver, aka the Naked Chef , has put together a wonderful Valentine's Day dinner for two. Once upon a time he actually did cook dinner for his wife naked, and the resulting humiliating and painful burns ended any thoughts of post-dinner romance. His advice - keep the dinner | simple and keep your pants on while you cook it. Jamie suggests simplicity for two reasons. First, you don't want to be spazzing out by the time you serve the meal. Second, a massive meal will leave you feeling bloated and exhausted, two distinctly un-sexy sensations. This meal can even be fun to prepare together, if you and your partner enjoy cooking a deux.
We went to Epicurious (www.epicurious.com), our favorite online source for cooking inspiration, for the Jamie Oliver menu. We also consulted Kim, our resident entertaining expert. Kim will be publishing entertaining suggestions in our newsletters. She is also available at kim@tellmegirlfriend.com to answer your cooking and entertaining questions. Jamie Oliver suggests starting the evening with a Jum and Bender, a passionfruit and Champagne cocktail. That involves squeezing the passionfruits, which seems to fly in the face of the whole easy, stress-free idea. A Pomegranate Champagne cocktail would be easier (although it still involves boiling a syrup). You might consider serving the classic unadulterated - Champagne. Epicurious lists six to consider, from $11 to $150 per bottle.
A more labor-intensive menu, if you love to cook, is the Aphrodisiac menu, which has us salivating like Pavlov's dogs. The spectacular-sounding Poached Oysters and Artichokes with Champagne Cream will be easier to make now that we can find canned artichoke bottoms at the grocery store.
Sometimes a dinner for adults only is simply not on the menu. If your Valentine's Day will be a family affair, check out these treats that will be popular with the kids. Maybe you can even fix them together. When we cook with our children we feel like wonderful moms. Kim (kim@tellmegirlfriend.com) cooks special dinners with her children weekly (!) and has the following suggestions for making it a memorable family meal:
 |
A drink that is a treat is a great start. A Raspberry Royale is an easy beginning. Dampen the rim of a champagne glass and dip in sugar - everyone gets a champagne glass. Do this ahead of time, so that the rims can dry. Place a few raspberries in each glass, then two tablespoons of Framboise raspberry liqueur. This is, of course, optional for the kids. Fill the adult glasses with Champagne and the kid glasses with Sprite.
Make an appetizer plate that you can both enjoy | while you make the dinner and the kids finish any homework on the agenda. Cheese Straws are quick and easy. You can add some nuts, cheese, sliced apples and pears. Another easy, delicious appetizer is a slice of smoked salmon on a good-quality cracker topped with a dab of creme fraiche or sour cream. Use the good serving dishes - what better time? Also, light lots of candles. For Kim's special dinners with her kids, ten is a minimum.
For the main course, Filet au Poivre is simple to prepare, delicious and popular with the whole family. Asparagus is a hit with all of our children, especially when accompanied by Hollandaise Sauce. Knorr Hollandaise Mix may not be quite as luscious as the original eggy-buttery delight, but it can be made in advance and reheated. Kim's kids love asparagus tossed in a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper, roasted, then sprinkled with Parmesan and roasted for a few more moments.
| For dessert, everyone gets into pajamas. A family game along with dessert will be a great finish to the evening. Kim suggests Sequence as a wonderful family game. Alex's kids really enjoy Jenga. If you have a fireplace, light a fire. Coeur a la Creme with Raspberries is easy and popular. You need to |
 | prepare it ahead of time, which is a good thing for the non-stress meal that is our goal. A special heart-shaped mold with a perforated bottom is very nice, but not necessary. You can also use a 7 inch sieve and cheesecloth.
Kim's current favorite inspiration is the Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten. We've cited some of her recipes above. Kim especially likes Barefoot Contessa Parties! for setting the table and the mood. She mentioned that the Barefoot Contessa at Home is available at Costco now at half price.
If none of our suggestions is inspiring you, Epicurious has an entire Valentine's Day site. Obscurely, there are other recipes available in another area of the site, which we give to you here. We are grapefruit fiends, so the Grapefruit Tart is tormenting us with its sweet-sour deliciosity. We must stop reading and go get something to eat!!!
Your gluttonous Girlfriends,
Suzanne and Alex
