We want to help others. We know that the need worldwide is enormous. We also want to know that our money is being used wisely. We want our donations, whether small or large, to make a real, positive impact on the lives of others. We have found an absolutely wonderful online resource that lets us satisfy our hearts and our brains - GlobalGiving (www.globalgiving.com). GlobalGiving begins with dedicated individuals who are driving change in their communities, from running orphanages to helping survivors of natural disasters. These project leaders post their causes and details about what they need on the GlobalGiving website. You can search projects through their Project Catalog or by projects that are close to being funded. GlobalGiving also has an excellent Donation Wizard that will match you with projects that dovetail with your priorities. GlobalGiving brings rapid help directly to the organizations that need it. They investigate the projects, making sure they meet Uncle Sam's requirements. This means that they are tax-deductible and that they meet anti- terrorism guidelines. All of the details of the project are available on the GlobalGiving website. You can make a donation from your computer and know that the organization you choose will have the money within a month. Each project is clearly described. While the summary lists the total funding needed, the detail page will give you an idea what your donation will do. For example, with the PlayPump System $60 will provide ten people with ten years of clean water. $14,000 will provide a PlayPump water system for a village (and some fun for the children). $20 will provide a classroom in which 120 Afghan boys (who were formerly refugees or soldiers) can study for six months, their first opportunity for education. Other projects help women, promote sustainable agriculture, fight climate change and pursue many other goals. GlobalGiving makes giving easy, and they will help you to set up a program that meets your individual needs. For example, it is simple to give a gift of giving. You decide the amount, and the recipient decides which project to support. GlobalGiving can help you to set up a gift registry. This would be a wonderful option for a significant birthday, an anniversary or a wedding. A fund can also be established in memory of someone. If you have your own firm, GlobalGiving will help you to set up a custom giving website for your employees. Your company may already partner with GlobalGiving. GlobalGiving retains 10% of your donation to fund their operations, to find and research projects and to raise funds. This is very low as these organizations go. We love this site.
