treat those tender paws tenderly

If you have a dog or a cat, you probably know the scenario. You have put off trimming Fido's/Fluffy's toenails because you hate doing it and Fido/Fluffy hates having you do it. Sometimes you take the mutt (or the cat) to the groomer for a nail trim, but it is a lot of time and hassle, plus Fido and Fluffy are totally traumatized by the Evil Woman With Clippers, which adds to
your bias for procrastination. (OK, for the rest of this we're only talking about Fido, but please keep in mind these are good for cats, too. Or any pet that needs its nails trimmed.)

But it must be done. You casually get the clippers out of the drawer, at which point Fido disappears. You call him in a sweet tone of voice that isn't fooling anyone.  You find his charming dogness and carry or drag him back to the surgery center, his paws scrabbling wildly. You enlist a reluctant helper to hold Fido and/or Fido's leg and begin to clip. You are as careful as you can possibly be, which results in taking off almost no nail at all. You clip a little farther up and you hit Fido's quick. Yipping. Blood. General misery. And you still have 19 toenails to go. Ah, the joys of pet ownership.

Quickfinder to the rescue! This clipper identifies where the quick stops in a doggie nail, even in those black, opaque nails. This is a new product, and we have been eagerly awaiting its
commercial availability. Now you can get it from PetGadgets (www.petgadgets.com). There are three sizes, one for cats or small animals, one for dogs up to 40 pounds and one for dogs from 40 to 75 pounds. Next year we expect a king-sized cutter for dogs over 75 pounds.

Good news and bad news. You can read about the development of the Quickfinder, which is mildly interesting (and brief) (That's the good news). What you can't do today is to order one of the danged things from PetGadgets. They are on back order. This is very frustrating for your Girlfriends, as they have just become available. However, Quickfinder is an exciting new development for us indulgent pet owners, so we suppose we can understand why they have gone out of stock so quickly.

There are three courses open to you. You can put your name on the email notification list to have PetGadgets let you know when they're back in stock. If you want it now, you can buy it on eBay from ALW Pet Stuff or by entering "quickfinder nail" in the search box. We have to warn you that you'll be bidding against Alex! But she's a notorious cheapskate, so you shouldn't have any trouble outbidding her. Finally, we found it at Amazon.com, and hopefully it will stay in stock. Search for "quickfinder" in pet supplies.

Now, when Fido or Barkus or Fluffy or Nibbles wants to write us with his or her thanks, you'll be able to do the paw-print signature without the poor thing freaking out when you touch his or her poor paw. Hurrah! Hurrah!
